Man möchte beinahe den Eindruck gewinnen, der Vokativ der "-ius"-Substantive werde generell gemieden.

Also, was ich gefunden habe ist folgendes. Es scheint eine seit Jahrhunderten geführte Debatte darüber zu geben welchen Vokativ die Wörter auf -ius haben. Klassisches Belegmaterial gibt es sogut wie keines, denn es erscheint in der klassischen Epoche seltsamerweise sogut wie kein einziger maskuliner Vokativ von Wörtern auf -ius im Vokativ, (außer Namen und filius, was uns in der Sache nicht weiterhilft):
The most surprising feature of our data is the fact that there is so little early, classical, or Silver Latin evidence for the vocatives of -ius words other than names and filius.
Die Autorin schreibt dann noch, daß sie sich darüber wundert, denn die weiblichen und sächlichen Vokative von Wörtern auf -ius erscheinen klassisch reichlich. Aber die bringen uns ja auch nicht weiter in dieser Sache.

Those less common were normally avoided, especially in the higher registers of the language; if used, however, they too normally formed a vocative in -i, except for some Greek words which took -ie. Then the vocative paradigm was regularized by the creation of vocatives in -ie for the words whose vocatives had formerly been avoided
Das heißt Cicero hätte den Schmied vielleicht "veni huc ferrari!" gerufen, und ein spätklassicher Autor eher "veni huc ferrarie!".
